Among more than 56 ethnic groups in SNNPR, 21 are pastoralists and agro-pastoralists, all of them are ethnic minorities .Each of them has their own language, culture and history.
These ethnic groups are

Arbore, Kara, Dasenech, Gnanagatom, Murile, Kuyegu, Murji, Bodi,
Deme, Maji, Surma, Dize, Zilimamo, Meanet, Chara, Nao
The total population in SNNPR is 15 million, of which around 510,000(3.4%) are pastoralists and agro-pastoralists living in 32% of the total area of the region. |

The intervention now is more organized than before:- 1/ The regional government designed an integrated 5 year pastoralist development program 2/ Established the organizational structure at all level ( bureau at the regional , Department at the Zonal level , office at district level). The heads of these organization at all levels are members of the cabinet, 3/ special fund allocated by the regional government is increasing every year, 4/ Federal government also support by formulating PCDP ( pastoralist community development project) and channel the grant and loan funds from the world bank and IFAD through PCDP.
Agricultural development and food security is one 50 the components of the integrated 5 year plan. Activities in order to improve animal husbandry
(Improvement of grazing land, water supply, animal health and marketing) have given attention. In order to improve crop production and productivity input supply, small scale irrigation, training on agricultural packages and extension services are the major activities.
